Shrinking Cities Part II (2009–2011)

Since 2009, I have been looking into the shrinking of Halle (Saale) again. By chance, I found myself at some of the very same places I had visited – and photographed – back in 2001/2002, and hardly recognised that part of town. Houses have been – and are still being – torn down to an extent that would not have seemed possible ten years ago. But the photographs show that more has changed since then: The optimism of the early years of the millennium has passed; sobriety has taken its place. Both authorities and residents are acutely aware that the process of change will not be completed in the near future.

Although incredibly impressive, I do not concentrate of photographing the obvious contrasts in this changing landscape in the first place. Instead, I try to reanalyse and challenge the striking emptiness of this urban area.

Seit 2009 beschäftige ich mich erneut mit dem Schrumpfen der Stadt Halle (Saale). Durch einen Zufall war ich nach Jahren zum ersten Mal wieder an den Orten, die ich von 2001 – 2002 fotografiert habe und erkannte den Stadtteil kaum wieder. Der Abriss von Wohnhäusern ist in einem Umfang fortgeschritten, den niemand vor wenigen Jahren für möglich gehalten hätte. Doch hat sich mehr verändert, als den Bildern zu entnehmen ist. Der Optimismus der frühen 2000er Jahre ist verflogen, Ernüchterung ist eingetreten. Den Bewohnern wie auch den Verantwortlichen ist klar geworden, dass der begonnene Prozess noch lange nicht abgeschlossen ist.

Ich fotografiere nicht vorrangig direkte Gegenüberstellungen, obwohl diese Vergleiche äußerst beeindruckend sind. Vor allem untersuche ich die Orte neu und setze mich mit der Leere des städtischen Raumes auseinander.
